Hi Folks,

First of all, some stuff I have been collecting.

 Photobie 2.8.6

The problem with most graphic editors out there today is that they either have too many features or not enough. There are too few programs that go down the middle of the road when it comes to power inside of an image editor. Well, one of the few that walks the line perfectly is Photobie.

The developer of Photobie writes:

Photobie is an Image Editing software with most features similar to Photoshop plus advanced screen capture and photo frame editing features. With Photobie screen capture you can prepare presentations very simply. Photobie has a simple user interface.

Furthermore, if you have MS Word and other software that create specific graphics or art fonts, then with Photobie you can simply capture it and paste it to any image. Photobie supports multiple-layer image retouching for advanced image editing.

Want to see it in action? Check out the gallery of screen shots available.

If you need a light graphic editor that doesn’t have all the tools and features of some of the more expensive programs out there, Photobie is the way to go. It packs a punch - yet it is totally free to use.

Flags, sudoku and calendars

Over the weekend, I was helping my son Ian with a school project. He needed a picture of the flag.

Of course, there are many places on the Internet to get a picture of our flag. But these are usually photographs, unsuitable for the project at hand.

So we went to PDF Pad and got a flag there. You simply select the flag and the dimensions and then click print. The site will print it to a PDF file. You can print the contents of the file with the free Adobe reader.

And while I was there, I got some printouts for myself – Sudoku games! There's also graph paper, calendars and storyboards for aspiring film makers. Check it out!

This holiday season, there are no must-have electronic items. And that's good news for shoppers. Tune in to tomorrow's national radio Kim Komando Computer Minute to learn more. So you think you're pretty smart

Computer-generated graphics have become startlingly good. Anyone who's seen some of the recent blockbusters knows this.

Sometimes, computer generated graphics are so good, they're indistinguishable from reality. Care to disagree?

Then take the Fake or Foto test at today's Cool Site. It presents you with a series of 10 images. All you need do is select which are real and which aren't.

You may be shocked when you see your score. You'll also get the opportunity to see the correct answer for each picture. This is a fun quiz to share with your friends!

Annoying firewall notices

I have Norton Firewall. It seems like it is more hacker friendly than protection friendly. I get alerts that other computers are trying to connect with my computer. The recommended action according to Norton is to allow. What do you make of this? Or am I totally off base?

Yes, I think you're a little off base. Norton is definitely more protection-friendly than hacker-friendly. Norton wants to sell its security products, after all!

These alerts are designed to help you. However, I can understand why they can be annoying. But there are some things you can do to alleviate the nuisance.

First, when you see an alert, you can select "Always use this action" and then click Block. You won't continue to get the alert. Now, if the request for access to your machine comes from somewhere else, you may get a different alert.

For programs on your computer that need to reach the Internet, you'll also receive alerts. When these pop up, you can select "Always use this action" and then click Block or Allow.

Of course, you can run into problems with this. You don't want to allow a bad program to access the Internet. But you want the good ones to get through.

So you should run a Program Scan. This will set up allowances based on Norton's recommendations.

In Norton, click Personal Firewall on the left pane. If you don't see Personal Firewall, click Status & Settings>>Personal Firewall.

Click Configure and open the Programs tab. If there is a list of programs, click one and press Ctrl + A. Click Remove and click Yes on the two dialog boxes.

Once the program rules are gone (or if they never existed), click Program Scan. After the scan finishes, click Check All. Click Next and Finish. Click OK.

Of course, you can turn off alerts altogether. I wouldn't really recommend it, though. Click Options>>Norton Protection Center. Uncheck "Show Firewall alerts" and click OK.

If you don't have a firewall on your computer, you'll find links to some good free ones in my Downloads section. Click here. But remember, you should only run one firewall. Click here to learn more.

Sometimes firewalls want to block everything. To learn how to fix this problem, read my tip. Click here.
