How do I direct "My Documents" to my data drive?
At Last! A Simple Question.
Stan asks:
I have Windows and my Programs installed on the C: drive. My Data is on a different drive. I use a third drive for my backups. When I open Word, Excel of other programs the automatic path is to Documents and Settings on the C: drive. The same is true when I go to save my work as it is vectored to the C: drive. How and where do I change the Path to the other drive?
Assuming that you have Windows XP, this is very simple.
Click on Start, right click on "My Documents" and left click on "Properties". In the middle of the "Target" tab, you will see "Target Folder Location" with some buttons under it. The target will normally be a long one starting out with "C:\Documents and Settings\....".
The "Restore Default" button will restore the target folder to the default location if you have problems later like with a removable of bad drive. The "Move" button will allow you to point the "My Documents" shortcut to another location. Click on "Move" and a "Select a Destination" window will appear. Navigate to where you want to store your documents (or to where you already have them stored) and click the OK button. If you need to create a new folder, you can click on the "Make New Folder" button. Click on OK to close the previous window and you are done.
I hope this helps!
